Middle East snaps up top foals at Flanders Foal Auction

Flanders Foal Auction has once again set a new record. On Saturday evening, 28 June, at Peelbergen Equestrian Center, the average price of the jumping foals rose from €17,900 in 2024 to €21,500. The undisputed auction topper, Cerly Chin van de Eijkhof Z (Carrera VDL), changed hands for €72,000 after a tense phone bidding duel between two buyers from the Middle East.

Over the years, Flanders Foal Auction has pushed boundaries, both literally and figuratively. In addition to foal auctions in Belgium, the organisation has held auctions in the Netherlands and Germany, with foals even auctioned off in the UK. Embryo auctions have taken place not only in home country, but also in the Emirates, Ireland and Slovakia, while the Flanders brand has also made appearances in the USA, Norway and Italy.

Returning clients
The auction’s international reputation is part of its success, but customer satisfaction is just as key. Even though they weren’t physically present in Peelbergen, buyers placed winning bids multiple times. Enthusiasts from the Middle East secured six foals and battled one another for the auction topper. In total, 30 out of 32 jumping foals were sold.

The auction kicked off with the former 1.50m level showjumping mare Havana M (Verdi x Cardento), who will remain in Belgium for €18,000, while her foal by Tattoo TN will move to Switzerland. With sales to Ireland, the Emirates, the Netherlands, USA, Italy, Portugal and again Switzerland, the bidding heat intensified when Cerly Chin van de Eijkhof Z (Carrera VDL) entered the arena.

Old Lodge Stud strikes again
This chestnut filly with her striking blaze is out of Verly Chin Van Het Schaeck (Aganix du Seigneur), a half-sister to 1.60m Grand Prix stallion Million Dollar. The fact that Verly Chin had just won the final of the Hendrix Competition for 4-year-olds the day before, scoring an 8.8 for her way of jumping, certainly added to her appeal. For €72,000, Cerly Chin will move to Old Lodge Stud in England, founded by Saudi Prince Torki and now run by his son, Prince Sultan. There, she will join Olympic mare Ornellaia (by For Pleasure), who recently fetched €136,000 at Sentower Park.

Hasta la Vista AEG Z (Heartbreaker x Baloubet du Rouet), a stunning half-brother to Scott Brash’s former top horse Hello M’Lady, was sold via phone to Monaco for €50,000. Una Girl W Z (United Touch S x Kashmir Van Schutterhof) from the renowned Roosakker line, sold for €40,000 to the Middle East, as did the filly Hasna Z (Heartbreaker x Con Air), bred out of a full sister to HH Conrad, who went for €38,000.

Buyers from China were present on-site and secured Cleverflash DW (Chacco Blue x For Pleasure) for €34,000, he is an interesting grandson of Walnut de Muze. Additional sales went to Colombia, Slovenia, Austria, and Italy. Notably, not a single foal was sold to Belgium, and only one was acquired by a Dutch buyer: showjumper Willem Greve.

“What more can we say, other than that it was another highly successful auction?” said organisers Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts afterwards. “We had a strong collection across the board, and that was clearly appreciated. We deliberately selected some foals from high-quality Dutch damlines, but the interest in those was a bit lower than expected. Midden-Oosten vist topveulens weg op Flanders Foal Auction

 

Flanders Foal Auction mag opnieuw een record in de boeken zetten. Zaterdagavond 28 juni steeg op Peelbergen Equestrian Center de gemiddelde prijs van de springveulens van 17.900 euro (2024) naar 21.500 euro. De absolute veilingtopper, Cerly Chin van de Eijkhof Z (Carrera VDL), wisselde voor 72.000 euro van eigenaar na een telefonische strijd tussen twee kopers uit het Midden-Oosten.

Flanders Foal Auction heeft door de jaren heen de grenzen letterlijk en figuurlijk verlegd. Er zijn niet alleen veulenveilingen in België, maar ook in Nederland en Duitsland en er zijn al eens veulens in Engeland geveild. Er zijn embryoveilingen in eigen land, maar ook in de Emiraten, Ierland en Slowakije, terwijl ‘Flanders’ ook al in Amerika, Noorwegen en Italië is geweest.

Terugkerende klanten
De naamsbekendheid maakt deel uit van het succes van het veilinghuis, maar de tevredenheid van klanten ook. Ook al waren ze niet fysiek aanwezig op Peelbergen, ze plaatsten meerdere keren het winnende bod. Fokkerijliefhebbers uit het Midden-Oosten legden zelfs zes veulens vast en streden tegen elkaar om de veilingtopper. In totaal werden 30 van de 32 springveulens verkocht.

De veiling ging van start met de 1.50m springmerrie Havana M (Verdi x Cardento), die voor 18.000 euro in België mag blijven, en haar veulen van Tattoo TN die naar Zwitserland verhuist. Via verkopen naar Ierland, Emiraten, Nederland, Amerika, Italië, Portugal en nog eens Zwitserland, steeg de temperatuur nog wat hoger toen Cerly Chin van de Eijkhof Z (Carrera VDL) de baan betrad.

Old Lodge Stud slaat toe
De vosmerrie met haar opvallende bles komt uit Verly Chin Van Het Schaeck (Aganix du Seigneur), de halfzus van de 1.60m Grand Prix hengst Million Dollar. Dat Verly Chin een dag eerder de finale van de Hendrix Competitie voor vierjarigen won met een 8.8 voor de wijze van springen hielp ook zeker mee. Voor 72.000 euro verhuist ze straks naar Old Lodge Stud in Engeland, opgericht door de Saudische prins Torki en voorgezet door diens zoon prins Sultan. Daarmee wordt Cerly Chin straks stalgenote van de olympische merrie Ornellaia (For Pleasure), die recent op Sentower Park 136.000 euro opbracht.

Hasta la Vista AEG Z (Heartbreaker x Baloubet du Rouet), een schitterende halfbroer van Scott Brash’ voormalig toppaard Hello M’Lady, werd over de telefoon naar Monaco verkocht voor 50.000 euro. Una Girl W Z (United Touch S x Kashmir Van Schutterhof) uit de Roosakker familie kwam voor 40.000 euro in handen van het Midden-Oosten, net als het merrieveulen Hasna Z (Heartbreaker x Con Air) uit de volle zus van HH Conrad voor 38.000 euro.

Chinezen kochten ter plekke Cleverflash DW (Chacco Blue x For Pleasure) voor 34.000 euro en legden daarmee een interessante kleinzoon van Walnut de Muze vast. Verder waren er nog verkopen naar Colombië, Slovenië, Oostenrijk en Italië. Opvallend is dat niet één veulen naar België is verkocht en slechts één veulen werd door een Nederlander aangekocht, springruiter Willem Greve.

“Wat kunnen we hier nou van zeggen, behalve dat het weer een zeer geslaagde veiling was?”, vertellen Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts na afloop. “We hadden in de breedte een sterke collectie en dat werd gewaardeerd. We hebben bewust wat veulens meegenomen uit kwaliteitsvolle Nederlandse moederlijnen, maar de animo daarvoor was toch wat minder dan gedacht. We koersen verder, want de volgende veiling is al over een maand, op zaterdag 26 juli, tijdens het jonge-paardenconcours van Holger Hetzel in Goch, Duitsland.”
