Flanders Embryo Auction: Artemis Farms holds strong against the Irish
“That was some show,” exclaimed auctioneer Louis De Cleene as he stepped off the stage just before midnight on Friday, August 8. And it was an apt description of a vibrant Flanders Embryo Auction in Dublin, where the atmosphere was sky-high and prices hit a new record. Two embryos sold for €88,000 and one for €84,000. Although the Irish pushed hard, former Olympic champion Rodrigo Pessoa signed the contracts on the spot on behalf of his sponsor.
The fifth edition of the Flanders Embryo Auction, held in the stunning InterContinental Hotel at the corner of the RDS Dublin Horse Show, is beginning to outgrow its setting. Hundreds of equestrian fans stood and sat packed together, discussing pedigrees, enjoying drinks and following the auction to the very last second. It was entertainment at its finest, bids were made, deals were negotiated, pauses were taken, laughter and challenges filled the room, there was a buzz of chatter and the rules were even bent here and there. Louis De Cleene had his hands full keeping things under control, part of the charm of “Dublin.”

The Irish know what they want and embrace the concept of the Flanders Embryo Auction. The buyer earns the title of breeder and the pedigrees of these unborn foals are of absolute top quality. However, American Kristy Clark of Artemis Farms in Wellington also knew exactly what she wanted for her budding breeding program. She sent her sponsored rider Rodrigo Pessoa to secure three embryos, but no one expected she would have to pay €260,000 to get them.
Of the 25 embryos sold (due in 2026), 24 fetched an average of €30,300, another record for “Flanders.” The first to reach €88,000 was the United Touch S out of McLain Ward’s Azur HH (Thunder vd Zuuthoeve), the most successful mare ever with €4.3 million in prize money. Sold for €84,000 was the Ermitage Kalone out of the 1.65m Grand Prix mare Like A Diamond Van Het Schaeck (Diamant de Semilly), and the evening’s finale - again €88,000 - was for the full brother or sister of Christian Kukuk’s Olympic champion Checker 47 (Comme il Faut x Come On).
Irishman James Doyle was just as determined to secure the final lot and took on the challenge, but after a long battle, he conceded and shook Pessoa’s hand to loud applause. Doyle, a valued customer since the first Dublin edition, purchased two other embryos that evening, including the Mylord Carthago out of Qerly Chin’s daughter Toxine de Mars (Dollar de la Pierre) for €33,000.
Rodrigo Pessoa was relieved that the mission had been accomplished. “Artemis Farms is an amazing sponsor for me and Kristy Clark is a fantastic person. She’s very passionate and wants to focus a bit more on breeding. Then you’d better start strong, buy something here and hope for a filly. Fillies with these bloodlines rarely come onto the market,” Pessoa noted. “It’s just a pity I probably won’t get to ride them myself,” he laughed, referring to his age.
Three embryos were sold online, the other 21 in the room, with sixteen going to Irish buyers. Top rider Darragh Kenny bought two: the Emerald x Heartbreaker (¾ sibling of the 1.60m GP mare Kalinka van ’t Zorgvliet) for €40,000 and the Ermitage Kalone out of the full sister of his former top horse Romeo 88 (1.65m GP) for €30,000.
Daniel Coyle will be adding the ¾ sibling of his top horse Legacy (1.65m GP) to his stable. Sponsor Ariel Grange secured this Chippendale Z x Coriano Z for €17,000. Bertram Allen, together with Aloga Auction, purchased the Pacino x Cornet Obolensky, bred out of the 1.60m Grand Prix mare Areeb O.L. Greg Broderick also secured two future stars.
The “Flanders weekend” is far from over, as tonight, Saturday, August 9, foals will be auctioned at Sentower Park. Fireworks can be expected again, starting with the sale of the 1.65m Grand Prix mare Irenice Horta, followed by her filly foal.
Flanders Embryo Auction: Artemis Farms houdt stand tegen Ieren
“Dat was me een show zeg”, blaast veilingmeester Louis De Cleene uit als hij vrijdag 8 augustus tegen middernacht van het podium stapt. En dat was een rake omschrijving van een bruisende Flanders Embryo Auction in Dublin, waar de sfeer sky-high ging en de prijzen naar een nieuw record trok. Twee embryo’s werden verkocht voor 88.000 euro en één voor 84.000 euro. Hoewel de Ieren er nog zo hard aan trokken, tekende voormalig olympisch kampioen Rodrigo Pessoa ter plekke de contracten af namens zijn sponsor.
De Flanders Embryo Auction in het prachtige InterContinentalHotel, op de hoek van RDS Dublin Horse Show, kende de vijfde editie en begint qua setting uit de voegen te spatten. Honderden paardensportfans stonden en zaten opeengepakt bij elkaar om de pedigrees door te spreken, een drankje te pakkenen de veiling tot aan de laatste seconde mee te beleven. Het was entertainment op zijn top, want er werd geboden, onderhandeld, gewacht, gelachen, uitgedaagd, er was rumoeren er werd aan de spelregels getornd. Louis De Cleene had werk om alles in het gareel te houden, maar dat is ook meteen de charme van ‘Dublin’.

Ieren weten wat ze willen hebben en omarmen het concept van Flanders Embryo Auction. De koper mag zich de fokkernoemen en de pedigrees van de ongeboren veulens zijn van absolute topklasse. Echter, de Amerikaanse Kristy Clark van Artemis Farms in Wellington wist ook wat ze voor haar opstartende fokkerij wil binnenhalen. Ze had haar sponsorruiter Rodrigo Pessoa gestuurd om drie embryo’s vast te leggen, maar niemand had voorzien dat ze daar 260.000 euro voor moest neertellen.
30.300 euro gemiddeld
De 24 van de 25 verkochte embryo’s, die in 2026 geboren worden, brachten gemiddeld 30.300 euro op en ook dat is een nieuw record voor ‘Flanders’. De eerste voor 88.000 euro was de United Touch S uit McLain Ward’s Azur HH (Thunder vdZuuthoeve), de meest winnende merrie ooit met 4,3 miljoen euro prijzengeld. Voor 84.000 euro volgde de Ermitage Kalone uit de 1.65m Grand Prix-merrie Like A Diamond Van Het Schaeck (Diamant de Semilly). Afsluiter van de avond was volle broer of zus van Christian Kukuk’s olympisch kampioen Checker 47 (Comme il Faut x Come On) voor 88.000 euro.
De Ier James Doyle was net zo gemotiveerd om het slotstuk vast te leggen en ging de uitdaging aan, maar boog na een lange strijd het hoofd en schudde - onder luid applaus - de hand van Pessoa. Doyle, vanaf de eerste editie in Dublin een gewaardeerde klant, had al twee andere embryo’s, zoals de Mylord Carthago uit Qerly Chin’s dochter Toxine de Mars (Dollar de la Pierre) voor 33.000 euro.
Rodrigo Pessoa is opgelucht dat de missie is geslaagd. “Artemis Farms is een geweldige sponsor voor me en KristyClark is een fantastisch mens. Heel gepassioneerd en ze wil zich meer gaan richten op de fokkerij. Dan kun je maar beter goed beginnen, hier wat kopen en hopen dat er een merrieveulen bij zit. Merries met deze afstammingen komen amper op de markt”, realiseert Pessoa zich. “Het is alleen jammer dat ik ze zelf waarschijnlijk niet ga rijden”, lacht hij, doelend op zijn leeftijd.
Drie embryo’s werden online verkocht, de overige 21 in de zaal en zestien daarvan aan Ieren. Topruiter Darragh Kenny kocht er twee: De Emerald x Heartbreaker (3/4 broer of zus van 1.60m GP merrie Kalinka van 't Zorgvliet) voor 40.000 euro en de Ermitage Kalone uit de volle zus van zijn voormalig toppaard Romeo 88 (1.65m GP) voor 30.000 euro.

Bertram Allen kocht met Aloga Auction, de Pacino x Cornet Obolensky, gefokt uit de 1.60m Grand Prix-merrie Areeb O.L. Greg Broderick legde zijn hand op twee toekomstbeloftes.
Het ‘Flanders weekend’ is nog niet ten einde, want vanavond, zaterdag 9 augustus, worden er veulens geveild op Sentower Park. Ook dan mag er vuurwerk verwacht worden, beginnend met de verkoop van de 1.65m Grand Prix-merrie Irenice Horta, gevolgd door haar merrieveulen.
