Appaloosa steals the show at Flanders Foal Auction with €386,000 sale

“How many heart attacks have you had tonight, Annelore?” Someone joked at her table: “Probably as many as the spots on Joppe.” Breeder Annelore Roegiers could hardly believe her eyes and ears when her Appaloosa-colored colt Joppe AR Z (J-Nius V.V. Z x Fantomas de Muze) was hammered down for €386,000 at the Flanders Foal Auction.

The first foal auction of the year immediately earned its place in the record books. Not because of the hype surrounding Joppe AR Z, bred from the same damline as Lauren Hough’s former top horse Quick Study and Le Tot de Semilly, but also because another record was set on Saturday evening, June 13. The average price per foal rose to €39,400, while total sales reached €1,415,000. The evening opened with the eight-year-old broodmare Klarissa von Barlo (Kannan x Lux), a half-sister to United Touch S, selling for €115,000 via telephone bidding to an American buyer.

“The outcome of an auction is always so difficult to predict. The feeling beforehand was very positive, but we never dared to dream of this. It was as if everyone in the room had won the lottery. The breeders will be going home very happy. We also can’t imagine holding an auction without the internet anymore, as online bids were flying in from all directions. Twelve foals were sold to buyers present at Sentower Park, seven were sold via telephone and fifteen online,” said Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts.

A striking comparison: the foals sold on-site averaged €20,000, while those purchased online achieved an average of nearly €60,000. Clients from the United Arab Emirates secured eight foals, including Joppe AR Z, who followed in the footsteps of C-Bra van het Bokt, auctioned in 2025 for €402,000. A Hungarian bidder offered strong online competition but was ultimately outbid at €386,000.

Overcome with emotion, Annelore Roegiers said through tears: “I’m incredibly happy and grateful. This is absolutely crazy. I see it as a reward for all the bad luck I’ve experienced in my life. I think my late boyfriend decided from above that it was finally my turn to have some luck and said: ‘Let’s give her a helping hand.’”

For €78,000, Emerald du Ciel HH Z (Emerald x Thunder vd Zuuthoeve), out of the famous Grand Prix mare Azur HH, was sold to the UAE. Joining the same stable are Di Caprio van ’t Koningsbos (United Touch x Nabab de Rêve), out of the 1.55m Grand Prix mare Fleur de Kalvarie, sold for €70,000, and Uptown Funk LR Z (United Touch S x Heartbreaker), out of a full sister to several 1.60m Grand Prix horses, sold for €68,000. Sold to the United States for €68,000 is Cadeau van Overis (Cassini I x Canabis Z) out of the family of Hardrock Z.

“This is an auction we will remember for a long time. We want to hold on to this positive momentum because there are still many outstanding auctions ahead. The foals for the July 4 auction, also at Sentower Park, have already been filmed, and that too promises to be a very special collection,” Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenaerts concluded.

“Hoeveel hartverzakkingen heb je vanavond opgelopen Annelore?”  “Waarschijnlijk zoveel als de vlekjes op Joppe”, wordt er aan haar tafel gelachen. Fokster Annelore Roegiers kon haar oren en ogen niet geloven dat haar Appaloosa gekleurde Joppe AR Z (J-Nius V.V. Z x Fantomas de Muze) voor 386.000 euro werd afgeslagen op Flanders Foal Auction. 

De eerste veuleneditie van het jaar is er meteen één voor in de boeken. Niet alleen vanwege de hype rondom Joppe AR Z, gefokt uit de lijn van Lauren Hough’s voormalige toppaard Quick Study en Le Tot de Semilly, er werd zaterdagavond 13 juni een ander record neergezet. De gemiddelde prijs per veulen steeg naar 39.400 euro en in totaal werd er voor 1.415.000 euro verkocht. De achtjarige fokmerrie Klarissa von Barlo (Kannan x Lux), halfzus van United Touch S, opende de avond met 115.000 euro en kwam via de telefoon in Amerikaanse handen.

“De uitkomst van een veiling is zo moeilijk te voorspellen. Het gevoel was heel goed, maar hier durfden we niet aan te denken. Het was alsof de loterij overal in de zaal viel, de fokkers zullen gelukkig naar huis gaan. We kunnen ons ook geen veiling meer indenken zonder internet, want de online biedingen vlogen ons om de oren. Twaalf veulens werden aan aanwezigen op Sentower Park verkocht. Zeven gingen per telefoon en vijftien online”, vertellen Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts. 

Een markante vergelijking: De veulens die ter plaatse verkocht werden, brachten gemiddeld 20.000 euro op. De online aangekochte veulens gingen voor bijna 60.000 euro gemiddeld. Klanten uit de Emiraten legden acht veulens vast, waaronder Joppe AR Z, die in de voetsporen trad van C-Bra van het Bokt (in 2025 geveild voor 402.000 euro). Een Hongaar bood flinke tegenstand online, maar legde het af bij 386.000 euro.

Annelore Roegiers schiet in tranen: “Ik ben super gelukkig en blij. Dit is mega zot. Ik zie dit als een beloning voor alle pech die ik gehad heb in mijn leven. Ik denk dat mijn overleden vriend hierboven beslist heeft dat ik nu eens geluk heb en gezegd heeft: We gaan haar eens steunen.”

Voor 78.000 euro werd Emerald du Ciel HH Z (Emerald x Thunder vd Zuuthoeve) uit de beroemde Grand Prix-merrie Azur HH naar de Emiraten verkocht. Stalgenoten worden Di Caprio van ’t Koningsbos (United Touch x Nabab de Reve) uit de 1.55m Grand Prix merrie Fleur de Kalvarie voor 70.000 euro, en Uptown Funk LR Z (United Touch S x Heartbreaker) uit een volle zus van 1.60m Grand Prix paarden voor 68.000 euro. Naar Amerika voor 68.000 euro gaat Cadeau van Overis (Cassini I x Canabis Z) uit de lijn van Hardrock Z.

“Deze veiling is er één om te onthouden. We houden het goede gevoel vast, want er komen nog heel wat mooie veilingen aan. De veulens voor de veiling op 4 juli, ook dan op Sentower Park, zijn al op de video gezet en ook dat gaat een bijzondere collectie zijn!”, blikken Luk Van Puymbroeck en Gerald Lenaerts vooruit.
